Parrot Head Reef Deployment Postponed Until 2026

-The Parrot Head Reef is organized by Eternal Reefs, Reef Innovations, the Reef Ball Foundation and Parrot Heads in Paradise and will be deployed off Key West in 2026 to honor Jimmy Buffett-

SARASOTA, Fla. (June 2, 2025) – Due to operational and logistical challenges, the Parrot Head Reef deployment has been postponed until 2026. The project, originally announced in March 2025, was to have been launched on the two-year anniversary of Jimmy Buffett’s passing, September 1, 2025. Due to site changes and logistical challenges for individual Parrot Heads in Paradise (PHiP) clubs nationwide, organizers have pushed back and targeted September 1, 2026 for the inauguration of the project.

In associated news, Josh Jones, a member of the original Parrot Heads in Paradise club in Atlanta, won the nationwide search to develop a project design that appropriately combined the fun vibe of Parrot Head music with the environmental benefit of this underwater reef project. He is the son of two other inaugural Atlanta club members, Bill and Tracy Jones, and grew up in the club, his parents often bringing him to concerts in his car seat. This early exposure instilled in Josh a love of music and art; he plays the guitar and is a freelance illustrator and designer.

“I am so honored that the reef organizers picked my design…it was a blast to create something bright and bold and fun and funky all at once, including that saltshaker in the sand,” said Josh Jones, designer and Atlanta Parrot Heads in Paradise member. “I hope the vibe I created just makes everyone feel good and want to participate in this worthwhile project that can only help the ocean that Jimmy loved so well.”

We danced in Mexico on Parrothead Cruise 2025!

It had been exactly twenty years since the last Parrothead Cruise sailed out of the port of Los Angeles and cruised down the Mexican Riviera, with a musical lineup that included Jeff Pike and Hugo Duarte. As a number of our West Coast friends told us, it was “about damn time” to do it again! Parrothead Cruise 2025: Bailar En Mexico returned to the West Coast and by all accounts was another roaring success. As with all Parrothead Cruises, it kicked off with a well-attended (albeit chilly for SoCal) Bon Voyage party, this time at the lovely waterfront Doubletree San Pedro. Trop Rock OG and Parrothead Cruise alum, Jerry Gontang, made the trek down from Northern California to be our headlining entertainer and was later joined onstage by Bob Karwin, Jeff Pike, and Erica Sunshine Lee. We were also joined by contingents from the area's Los Angeles and Orange County Parrot Head Clubs. The next morning, the cruisers all made our way to the Port of Los Angeles and boarded our home for the next seven days, the Norwegian Bliss.

Once onboard it didn’t take long for the festivities to begin and the colorful Parrot-phernalia to come out of fully-loaded suitcases! Our first event was the Welcome Aboard Rendezvous, where everyone picked up their cruise credentials and special event tickets. Cruisers also had a chance to pick up some unique prizes in our basket raffle, the first of a number of fundraising opportunities during the week. The Welcome Aboard party was followed that night by the “Definitely Not a Pub Crawl Pub Crawl” – a chance for our Parrothead Cruisers to discover the places where many of them would be spending a large amount of their free time: the ship’s bars. There wouldn’t be much free time for the next six days, though, with our jam-packed schedule of parties and performances by our fantastic onboard entertainment lineup consisting of Bob Karwin, Erica Sunshine Lee, the Jonas Lorence Band and our very own Jeff Pike performing as a duo with Coral Reefer Robert Greenidge! In addition to our fun onboard we enjoyed port stops in Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas. Speaking of Cabo, a Parrothead Cruise wouldn’t be complete without a rocking In Port party and 2025’s – held at the world-famous Cabo Wabo Cantina - may just have raised the bar. Although transportation issues in the port between NCL and the local tender company unfortunately kept a small number of our cruisers from being able to attend, over 200 Parrothead Cruisers did make it to sing and dance along as all of the cruise’s musicians shared the stage – including the previously mentioned Jeff Pike (back after 20 years), Bob Karwin, and Erica Sunshine Lee, the Jonas Lorence Band, and Robert Greenidge. The cherry on top was a guest appearance from the one and only Nadirah Shakoor, flown in especially for the afternoon. Parrothead Cruise 2025: Bailar en Mexico was definitely a Party, but in true Parrot Head fashion, it was also a Party With a Purpose. When the dust settled and all bills were paid, the cruise netted over $63,000 for several of the top charities working to fight breast cancer. We look forward to seeing everyone on Parrothead Cruise 2026!

Happy St. Patrick's Day and as luck would have it, we are ready to announce and move forward with a project that will make National news!

The Parrot Head Reef is happening and you can be part of it! Whether as a club, a region, or even as an individual, this artificial reef to honor parrotheads and Jimmy off of Key West will be a great environmental cause and reason to party with a purpose with the first reef ball being purchased by PHiP!

Parrot Heads in Paradise and Eternal Reef

The Parrot Head Reef will be dedicated on September 1, 2025, two years after the passing of music’s beloved Jimmy Buffett, a passionate ocean conservation advocate. The reef will be located off Key West, Fla, one of Jimmy’s most famously favorite and storied cities. The marine area will become a dedicated space for underwater memorials featuring individual reef balls containing plaques paying homage to the original beach lover and ocean advocate.

The reef will be comprised of two sizes of reef balls, ranging in size from about 600 to 1,600 pounds, and each will feature an 8-inch circular bronze plaque, custom designed by each entity which purchases the memorial.

The project is a collaboration between Parrot Heads in Paradise (PHiP), a network of more than 200 social and charitable clubs around the U.S., Canada, Europe, the Caribbean and Australia, and Eternal Reefs, the Sarasota-based creative environmental memorial non-profit dedicated to placing living legacies that help preserve the marine environment for future generations.

The Parrot Head Reef will be located in a site permitted by Florida’s Monroe County that is .25 acres square. The location, 21 miles off Key West in 46 feet of water, is outside the sanctuary boundary and will feature a dedicated space to honor Jimmy Buffett and a cause he held so dear – ocean preservation.

While anyone may purchase a memorial, pricing preference will be given to PHiP members and clubs. In the week leading up to September 1, the completed memorials will be displayed in Key West for viewing by individuals and clubs. Pending weather, the first memorials in the Parrot Head Reef will be deployed, targeting a September 1 date. Dates are weather contingent.

Alzheimer Walk 2024

Hello APHC,

Thanks to all (Barb Grove, Annette Waddell, Felicia Meyers, Leslie Maske, and myself) who came out to walk at the Battery for the 2024 Alzheimer Memory Walk. So far we have raised $850. You can still donate. PHIP has raised over $173,000 as you can see it is a Parrot Head event for all the clubs. JD Buffett passed away with Alzheimer’s.
Barb, Annette, and Felicia walked all 3 miles while Leslie and I walked 1 mile. So you see you have options if you don’t walk on a regular basis. We all went back to the parking lot and enjoyed champagne and snacks while everyone else sat in line to get out of the parking deck. Please make a plan to walk with us next year. We have so much fun walking and catching up!

Margaritaville Shark and Lizard Bobbleheads with a Cause Unveiled to Celebrate Jimmy Buffett

This morning, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled limited-edition Margaritaville Shark and Lizard Bobbleheads. The bobbleheads join the Margaritaville Parrot Bobblehead that was released earlier this year and has been one of the best-selling bobbleheads of 2024. While the first production run sold out, the second production run is scheduled for delivery in September. The limited-edition bobbleheads are being produced by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum and are officially licensed by Margaritaville Enterprises.

Jimmy Buffett, who delighted fans at thousands of venues across the world during his illustrious career, died on September 1st, 2023, at the age of 76. The Singing for Change Foundation that he founded in 1995 funds organizations that inspire personal growth, community integration and the enhanced awareness that collectively, people can bring about positive change. We know that fans across the world will love hearing about this bobblehead commemorating Jimmy Buffett and raising funds for a great cause that was near and dear to him. Jimmy Buffett Day!

Florida legislature officially declared August 30, 2024 to be Jimmy Buffett Day in the state of Florida. This announcement was shared by the official social media accounts of Margaritaville, Buffett’s US-based hospitality company that he named after his 1977 signature tune. The post revealed that this honorary date will be dedicated to celebrating “the life and music of Jimmy Buffett, whose free-spirited life and significant contributions to national and state culture are commended and celebrated.”

Fans and Margaritaville Plan To Celebrate The Special Day In Florida And Beyond

Jimmy Buffett has always had a special connection to the Sunshine State, as he’s made clear through his collection of beachy tunes that represent the laid-back lifestyle on the water that he loved so much. Labor Day Weekend will be a special day of giving at all Margaritaville locations raising money for Jimmy’s charity, Singing For Change. Parrothead clubs are encouraged to do the same and raise money to benefit SFC during this weekend of giving.

Which Highway In Florida Will Be Named After Jimmy Buffett?

To honor the “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere” singer the Florida A1A, the famous state road that runs about 340 miles along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, to be renamed as the “Jimmy Buffet Memorial Highway.” The Department of Transportation will erect suitable markers designating the memorial highway by Aug. 30, 2024.”

The A1A was especially meaningful to Jimmy Buffett. Not only did he reference the road in his song, “Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season,” but he also made it the title of his fifth studio album of 1973. With this set of news, the Mayor of Margaritaville will continue to be honored for his lasting legacy and breezy tunes that serve as the perfect soundtrack to a day on the water or at a Florida where margaritas are encouraged at any time of the day.

Jimmy Buffett’s Legacy Lives On

Jimmy Buffett died on September 1 after a four-year battle with a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer called Merkel cell carcinoma. Buffett was 76 years old when he passed away. The statement posted to his official social media accounts on the fateful day read, “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs…He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

What an amazing weekend for the 28th annual A1A Beach Bash in their néw location, Amelia Island Florida!

Thank you Beaches A1A Parrotheads.

This event was so organized and well planned. I loved everything about it. The hotel was conveniently located to many yummy restaurants if you ventured outside from the hotel options. The Historical area was close by and it was such a cute little area. It reminded me of Key West in the 80s. It is even the home of the oldest saloon in Florida. WooHoo! The beach was beautiful and just across the street.
During the day we had music by the "drinking pool" with awesome musicians, full bar complete with food selections, and plenty of chairs. The music at night was incredible, Reggie Starrett, Ricky Lamb, Jonas Lorence Band, Joe Downing, Jesse Rice and Jimmy Parrish and the Waves closed out the event as usual. Everyone sang with everyone on the stage and on the dance floor.
This may become my favorite Parrothead event.... outside of the Atlanta Parrothead Club cruise, of course.

APHC Members Enjoy Mac McAnally at City Winery Atlanta by Mike Sorrells

On Sunday night, April 21, about 15 or so members of the Atlanta Parrothead Club were part of a packed house that finally got to see singer-songwriter, record producer and longtime Coral Reefer and 10 time CMA Musician of the Year, Mac McAnally, along with talented percussionist and composer, Eric Darken.

The show had been rescheduled from last December due to Mac losing his voice and going on doctor’s ordered vocal rest. I yelled out to Mac that we’d all been waiting there for him since December to which he laughed and said that we really had a lot of patience. This show almost didn’t happen as Mac and Eric dealt with delayed and cancelled flights in Texas, and an unplanned drive to Dallas in order to catch another flight as they fought to get to Atlanta. They did make it, but some of their luggage did not, including the bag that had Eric’s hubcap – if you don’t understand, then you need to catch one of their shows. He did have a replacement hubcap which came off of a car somewhere in Nashville.

This was the first time that most of us had seen Mac live since the death of Jimmy Buffett last September. During the interactive concert, Mac played some of his usual crowd favorites such as Blame it on New Orleans, Changing Channels, Down the Road, All These Years, Little Martha, and Junk Cars. He changed it up a little with Bear Necessities – Mac is presently working with Disney redoing music for the Country Bear Jamboree. But he also played a number of Jimmy’s hits including Son of a Son of a Sailor, Come Monday, and Coast of Carolina (the Come Monday “sequel” that Mac co-wrote with Jimmy). I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house as Mac sang the new tribute song to Jimmy, Pirates and Parrots, along with Tonight I Just Need My Guitar, and Bubbles Up.

Mac’s voice was getting a little weaker toward the end of the show due to allergies so he asked the house to join him for the closer, A Pirate Looks at 40, and we all obliged. Mac kept everyone’s attention as he usually does with his stories, many of which were about his personal experiences with his mentor and close friend, Jimmy Buffett. If you haven’t heard Mac talk about how Tonight I Just Need My Guitar came about, I won’t spoil it but go see him live or search for it online. His telling of the story is hilarious. He also talked about the last time that he saw Jimmy after he had been called and told that he needed to come say his goodbyes. That was roughly 24 hours before Jimmy’s passing. He said that Jimmy was laying in the hospital bed, smiling wider than his head. After Mac played Jimmy some songs and then they said the things they wanted to say, one of the last things that Jimmy said to Mac was ‘What a hell of a ride, keep it going, keep the party going,’ and as Mac said “it’s our intention to do that.”

Thanks for a great show Mac. In case any of you haven’t heard, Mac along with most of the Coral Reefers will be doing a number of shows this year including at Meeting of the Minds in Gulf Shores, Oct 22-27, so we’ll have some chances to see the Coral Reefers again. Remember, we’ve been instructed by the man who started all of this to “Keep the party going”. Bubbles up ya’ll.

St. Croix Animal Welfare Center - This Year Charity for APHC 34th Anniversary Party

Save Our Salty Dogs(and Cats too)

Many of us in the Atlanta Parrot Head Club (APHC) dream of living at the beach or on an island.

Wayne and Felicia Myers, long time members and former leaders of the APHC, made that dream a reality when they moved to St Croix several years ago.

The couple, In keeping with the club’s motto of “Party with a Purpose,” has always embraced investing time and money in multiple charities.

That did not change with their move to the tropics.

Wayne now works with the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center (SCAWC).

The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization’s mission is to provide and promote the humane treatment of animals through humane education, animal protection, community service and their Paws From Paradise Program.

This year the APHC will be raising funds throughout the year to provide assistance to the animals at the Center. The club will also be holding other fundraisers and events for other charities throughout the year.

Below are more details about the services provided by the SCAWC.

Community Clinic

For many pet owners on St. Croix, the cost of veterinary care is a struggle and some pet owners are unable to seek care at all.  When a pet becomes sick, it is often abandoned or surrendered instead of taken for treatment. A once loved pet gets thrown outdoors at the first sign of mange or forced to suffer through this and other treatable conditions.   The SCAWC provides a community clinic that provides low cost spay and neuter programs as well as medical care and treatments, which encourages individuals to keep pets in their homes and to promote humane and responsible pet ownership in the community.  The result is healthier, happier animals that live longer lives and remain in their homes and a community that seeks care for their pets instead of abandoning.

Paws From Paradise

Because there are not enough people to adopt the number of pets that arrive at the shelter, The Center also has an off-island pet transfer program called “Paws from Paradise.”  This program has been an important part of their life-saving efforts for many years.  Transferring pets from one shelter to another has become common practice in the mainland, where a shelter or rescue group in one area has a need for adoptable pets, while another has an abundance of pets but few adopters.  The Center has partners all across the states that understand the plight of abandoned and unwanted animals in our islands and are willing to help.

Humane Education

The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center has always had humane education as a core part of its mission.  Changing the way animals are treated is essential to stopping the problems of pet neglect and abuse, abandonment, and pet overpopulation.  The SCAWC provide humane education through elementary school visits, community outreach, adult education and social media advertising.

Animal Protection Services

The SCAWC provides animal protection services through 1) A compassion call which is when a stray animal in immediate need of medical attention (for instance, a dog or cat hit by a car). The Center responds to as many of these calls as possible but response is sometimes limited by resources and 2) Open Acceptance -Although SCAWC cannot always respond to calls for animals to be picked up, they always accept any animal that is brought to the shelter regardless of the reason, whether it is someone surrendering a pet or a compassionate community member who brings in a stray.

Friendsgiving at Cultivation Brewery with Barefoot Reggie

We did our 1st ever APHC Friendsgiving at Cultivation Brewery with Barefoot Reggie Starlett.

Little rainy and chilly but we had a lot fun singing along with Reggie. Great seeing everybody especially Beverly Thompson and Kurt Gauder.

We raised $618 at the Friendsgiving Party for the Atlanta Community Food Bank

We also collected a fair amount of food which we added to Cultivation Brewery Food Drive for the Norcross Food Pantry. Thanks to everybody that came out to Cultivation Brewery.

Walk to End Alzheimers

We had a great weather for this year's Walk to End Alzheimers at the Battery.

Shout out to this year's team - Team Captain Becky Kirbo, Allan and Barb Grove, Annette and Mark Waddell, and June Griffeth.

APHC Team raised $757 dollars this year Alzheimer's of Georgia and few bottles of bubbly were pop after the team did their 2.5 miles.

Creative Loafing and the Atlanta PHC

Creative Loafing is an alternative weekly newspaper in Atlanta that highlights arts, culture and the social scene in Atlanta. Creative Loafing is currently celebrating their 50th anniversary, and as part of the occasion they have published a special issue that highlights some of their milestones.

One of these milestones is that Creative Loafing was instrumental in the creation of the Atlanta Parrot Head Club and of the Parrot Heads in Paradise umbrella organization! Back in 1989, Scott Nickerson placed an ad in Creative Loafing looking to connect with like-minded Jimmy Buffett fans. The Parrothead Cruise is the Atlanta Parrot Head Club's primary philanthropic event, raising over $320,000 for charity to date. Unfortunately, due to the current circumstances with the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of when safe cruise-based travel will return we have made the difficult decision to cancel Parrothead Cruise 2021. As a small silver lining, we are excited to announce Parrothead Cruise 2022.

It’s going to take a year longer than we expected, but we will now Bring Back the Magic in March of 2022. We’ll be on the same ship, the Norwegian Joy, with all of the amenities and features we’ve been planning for, but will be following a Western Caribbean itinerary, sailing out of Miami on Saturday, March 12, 2022 visiting Roatán, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; Costa Maya, Mexico; and Cozumel, Mexico, returning Saturday, March 19^th. We will announce the Parrothead Cruise 2022 Entertainment Lineup in early 2021. Open Hand Atlanta – Meal Packaging

Open Hand was founded in 1988 by Michael Edwards-Pruitt, who rounded up his neighbors to help cook and deliver meals to 14 friends dying from AIDS who were too sick to cook for themselves. They expanded their mission to include those with non-HIV related critical illnesses, the disabled, and the homebound elderly in 2000. Open Hand prepares, packs and delivers nearly 5,000 meals on a daily basis. They are one of the largest community-based providers of home-delivered meals and nutrition services in the United States.

APHC Thanksgiving Celebration

45 club members gathered to celebrate friendship and kick off the holiday season. Music was provided by Reggie Starrett and turkeys were fried by Joel Oats and Everett Glover. Funds were raised for a local charity Good Mews. Good Mews is one of the few virtually cage-free, no-kill cat shelters in the state of Georgia and the first in the metro Atlanta area. Since 1988, Good Mews has placed over 9,000 cats in permanent homes. They receive no government support, relying solely on donations of time, service and money from our supporters, the public and area businesses. Good Mews is home to approximately 100 residents at any given time, with another 30 to 40 cats in foster care or our HALO program, which allows cats with severe and/or chronic medicals needs to find homes with Good Mews continuing to provide the medical care related to that condition. They have an average adoption rate of 450 cats per year.

Toys For Tots – Atlanta Parrot Head Club Christmas Party

The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens. The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.

On September 28, 2019, eight members of the Atlanta PHC volunteered at the 2019 Swim Across America event held at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands. Through funds raised from our 30th Anniversary Party and other sources, the APHC contributed over $7,000 in our first year participating! This qualified the club as a "Gold" level sponsor. It was a fantastic event, with over 600 swimmers raising well north of a half million dollars to fund cancer research. The APHC was also invited to participate in the Sponsors dinner the evening before, where we met the team behind SAA and also interacted with 14 Olympic swimmers. Ann Gotthelf Memorial Service

It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of Ann Gotthelf. Better known as Mother Parrot, she was 69 years young and loved this club like her family. She loved sporting her best tropical attire and brought joy to so many peoples lives. We can rest easy knowing that she is now back together with the love of her life Lee.

2018 Thanksgiving Celebration

On November 17, 2018 forty five club members joined together in Woodstock for our annual Thanksgiving Day celebration. This is a wonderful party to kick start the holiday season. The club provided three turkeys and club members Joel Oates and Everett Glover fried them up for us. Other club members brought appetizers, side dishes and desserts to be shared. Libations were flowing and the Gopher Broke band provided us with an evening filled with great music for singing and dancing.

We have kicked off the 2018 Holiday season with a bang. A big thank you to everyone who was involved with organizing this wonderful event and everyone who came out to support us.

Next year marks the 30th Anniversary of the founding of the Atlanta Parrot Head Club! Scott Nickerson started it all right here in Atlanta, and our club gave rise to the umbrella organization Parrot Heads in Paradise and the entire Parrot Head nation. In order to mark the occasion and to celebrate the amazing community that we've built we are going to throw a blowout party!

What a celebration!

Over 60 parrot heads, friends and guests packed out the patio at Miller’s Ale House on Saturday, June 23rd for the Atlanta Parrot Head Club’s 29th anniversary party. As always, it was a party with a purpose. Guests donated over 200 pounds of food (that is what the guys who loaded everything on the truck estimated the weight to be) for The Atlanta Community Food Bank. The club raised over an additional $1000 for the Food Bank through a raffle, prizes for which included, a Marietta Food Tour, The Wing Café and Tap House gift certificate, a massage from the club’s own massage therapist Sue Lorincz, multiple gift baskets and a Margaritaville cookbook.

In addition to the fund-raising there was some fun, quality time with friends and a little dancing thanks to the music provided Jim Asbel.

Congratulations and kudos to all those who helped plan the party and all of those who came out and made the night a smashing success.

Oakland Cemetery Halloween Tour

It was a ghoulish and great time at October's roaming happy hour. The club started out on the upper patio of Tin Lizzy's Cantina for food and spirits before touring Atlanta's historic Oakland Cemetery with different kinds of spirits. Among the ghosts who visited the group were Willis Erwin Veneable, who came up with the idea to carbonate Coca-Cola, two sisters murdered by their third sister - Florence and Minnie Force, Deliverance author and Poet Laureate of the United States James Dickey, and Beatrice Thompson, an African-American doctor who set up her medical practice in Athens in 1901. The night was a hit and we plan on putting together a group again next year to make the tour. We'll get tickets earlier so we can get more members into the event which sold out quickly this year.

With over 900 participants and almost $100,000 in donations, the inaugural Paint Gwinnett Pink 5K Walk for Breast Cancer on Saturday, October 1^st, at the Gwinnett Braves Coolray Field and nearby neighborhoods was a huge success. Simply put, ”It was AWESOME!!!” says Susan Oates, APHC member and Executive Director of Paint Georgia Pink, the organization that put the event together along with the Gwinnett Medical Center (GMC). Showing surprise at the eventual turn out, GMC’s Vice-President of Operations Cathie Brazell said “We were thinking we’d have 250 people.” in an article in the Gwinnett Daily Post.

In addition to a free round of drinks, which were courtesy of The Wing, APHC members who made it to last week's happy hour received free tickets to the Atlanta Braves games this Saturday, September 17th and Sunday, September 18th - some of the last games being played at The Ted. The rain on Sunday didn't dampen spirits as the gang tailgated and had a blast at the game. Remember membership and showing up for events has its benefits! Hope to see you at our next event.

Terry Farrell Firefighter’s Fund Stair Climb on 9/11

Sunday, September 11th was an incredibly rich, rewarding, at times somber and at times even fun day for the almost 20 APHC club members who turned out to honor the heroes who died and those who served and survived the tragedy on 9/11/2001. It was also a day of fundraising to aid those first responders who put their lives on the line for us in Georgia. Not only did almost all of the club members who accepted the challenge to climb 110 flights of stairs make their goal, most made it 112 flights and two others pushed themselves to climb 128 flights. Club climbers were Charlotte Pierce, Sue Lorincz, Jeff Hall, Mandy Carola, Wendy Price, Jeanette Gowen, Susie Amstutz and Bo Shurling. Mandy’s friend Laureli Srery and Susie’s friend Robyn Chapman also climbed with the group. Hope you two enjoyed the day and will consider joining the club.

For all of us who climbed it was tempting to complain about the sore muscles and the dripping sweat until we thought about how 15 years ago men in full gear climbed upwards in stairwells full of smoke and heat not exactly knowing what waited for them many floors up. For 343 it was death. For some who survived, death came later as a result from various causes from what they inhaled or experienced on that day. It was a rewarding and exhausting day but we know we can never repay a debt that is owed to those who put their lives on the line for us every day.

Club members Fredda and Everett Glover, Bob Scarboro, and Susan and Joel Oates volunteered to help with chores of making the Terry Farrell Firefighter’s Fund of Georgia 2016 stair climb a successful event.

Kim Shurling and Gib Amstutz showed up to lend moral support to the climbers and volunteers.

We received an email from event organizer Sue Korsch who said ,”Thank you for all you and your group did to make our day a wonderful success! We hope to see you next year.”

Those who didn’t make it missed out on a remarkable day. Club members who participated said they want to do it again next year. So please think about joining us.

John Friday House Concert - Saturday, July 30th

The weather gods provided the perfect evening for the club's John Friday house concert hosted by Sue Lorincz on Saturday, June 30th. Forty folks showed up for great music, fun, and fellowship. There was an overload of food and tons of desserts. There was also dancing as Friday cranked out such tunes as Still in Mexico and Parrot Head Girl. Amidst all of the good times there was some time set aside for good memories as the crowd raised a toast to trop rocker Jim Morris, who recently passed away, while Friday played Sangria Wine.

Pennie Lemley, and Felicia Myers won CDs donated graciously by Friday, and Pennie's husband David won an APHC magnet.

And this note from John Friday, "A thousand thanks to all the lovely Atlanta peeps who came out to the house concert last night! A thousand thousand thanks to Sue and Jeff for hosting and Debbie for getting it set up! I hope everyone had as much fun as I did! I love to play my songs for you."

Red Hare Brewery's Luau

The Atlanta Parrot Head Club had a great turn out of 35 folks for Red Hare Brewery's annual luau on Saturday, July 9th. We would have had larger numbers except the event sold out in advance and a few folks who waited until Saturday to buy tickets couldn't get in. The day was filled with heat, a great selection of cold beer, (in addition to the brewery's usual offerings, the brewery served up a specialty cask of Pina Colager - a lager made with pineapple and coconut - a perfect brew for Parrot Heads), some tasty barbecue, music by Rhythm Earth, and as always fun and friendship. Club members also got to leave the brewery with a six pack of SPF 50/50 Radler IPA, the Wabbit Wheat or the nonalcoholic root beer or grapefruit soda.

Sherri Bean Beideck, Kenny Paul and Becky Kirbo rejoined the club on Saturday. Please welcome them back the next time you see them.

A special congratulations to the brewery as they received 5 medals in the recent 2016 U.S. Open Beer Championship and placed 4th as best brewery in the competition.

The theme of the night was tropical and that included the 90+ degree heat but that didn't slow down the party for the approximately 20 club members and the crowd that turned up for the free Sons of Sailors concert in Glover Park on the Marietta Square on Friday, June 24th. The club set up at two tables to share food and fun, and sign up new members. Ten new folks joined the club including Neville Steel, Donna Watson, Stuart Vaughn, Rebecca Bell, and Tim and Myra Mathis. We are also excited to announce that former club members Paul and Lynn Behr, and John and Laura Yeste rejoined.

And it seemed a bit like old times - after the concert the party moved to Hemingway's on the square for more socializing and to hear Jeff Pike perform.

Congratulations to Barbara Behr and Neville Steel who respectively won our member and new member raffles.

Thanks to club member Gail Waters for her connections that helped us securing us the great spot.

The Butcher and Bottle with The Parrot Island Band

On Saturday June 11, 2016 14 club members came together at the Butcher and Bottle off Sixes road in Canton. A beautiful evening out on the patio listening to The Parrot Island Band. Trop rock artists Bry and Linda Harris along with Kevin Garrelts entertained us with congas, steal drum and a ukulele. APHC members enjoyed dancing and drinks while spending time with each other. We welcomed three new club members and celebrated Kristi Finley's birthday.

We also had a members only raffle which Lee Simmons was the winner of a CD donated by the band.

Thom Shepherd and Coley McCabe House Concert

Sunday, June 12, Thom Shepherd and Coley McCabe, hosted by Pete Trainor, was a reminder of everything that's special about House Concerts: an intimate gathering of friends and music fans listening to some great music, with the added benefit of getting to hear the stories behind the songs. Thom and Coley took the room on a roller coaster ride of emotions, from heartfelt and heart -warming songs like "I Am A Woman", to laugh out loud "adults only" numbers like the infamous "Djibouti". Thanks again to Pete for hosting, and to everyone who came out to the show!

2016 APHC Tailgate Recap

Jimmy Buffett’s “I Don’t Know” tour stop at the Infinite Energy Center didn’t start until 8 p.m. but the Atlanta Parrot Head Club started the tailgate party about 12 hours earlier. After putting up canopies, spreading out food, setting up grills and decorating their areas, partygoers were treated to music by Reggie Starret with Denny Martin sitting in and The Gopher Broke band (fun fact for Atlanta folks – the band’s Bobby Don wrote the “Play in the Dirt” jingle for Pike Nurseries). In spite of 90+ degree heat and a little bit of rain, APHC’ers and guests were dancing in the street (or at least the parking lot). The Atlanta Parrot Head Club provided bottled water to tailgaters to provide relief from the heat and portable toilets were provided for another type of relief. Lee and Debbie Simmons of Pirate Cove Radio, who broadcast live from the tailgate, cranked up the frozen concoction machine and kept the dancing crowd well-oiled with some refreshingly cool and tasty margaritas. As always, it was a great day of celebrating music, fun, and new and old friends. This year took on an international flair thanks to visiting new friends David and Annette from Australia, who provided their homeland’s snack Vegemite to party goers, helping make a G’day even better for their new mates. Fins up until next year.

APHC TAILGATING DETAILS

We will be in the same location as last year. There will be two motor homes and the club banner will be on one of them. We will have port-a-potties, a cooler of bottled water, gas grill(s), plenty of room for pop-ups.

Pirate Cove Radio will broadcast live from the tailgate, like last year, and there will be a Frozen Concoction Maker to turn out margaritas. Please donate some tequila and mixer to help keep them flowing!!!

We have plenty of live entertainment for you, too!

Reggie Starrett will start at 11:00 and will play for 1-1/2 hour.

Gopher Broke Band will start at 12:30 for 1-1/2 hour. Repeat.

Times are approximate but close.

Atlanta Community Food Bank

At the APHC Anniversary Party, April 9 at The Wing Cafe & Tap House, we collected $245 in checks and/or cash and 217 lbs of food. This will provide 1,160 meals to children, seniors, and many more families in need in our community via the Atlanta Community Food Bank!

APHC would like to have one happy hour per month at a fixed location, and leave the second happy hour on a roaming status.

We need everybody to a vote on where the fixed location should be. APHC like for it to be more centrally located since we have members in Cobb, Cherokee, Gwinnett, Fulton, DeKalb, Rockdale, etc..

It would be nice for location to have room for us, and a patio would be a plus since we are heading into warmer weather.

2016 DUES ARE DUE BY 2/15/16

$20 per person or $30 per couple/family payable in cash or a check made out to "The Atlanta Parrot Head Club" or “APHC”. Dues should be been postmarked by February 15th, but will be accepted after that date along with a $5 late fee.

If dues (along with late fee, if applicable) are not paid by February 28, 2015, the member will no longer be considered a member in good standing, with all of the associated ramifications (will no longer receive APHC Weekly Updates, loss of eligibility to participate in MOTM, loss of eligibility to purchase club tickets for Buffett concert, etc.).
